"I was so surprised, but very happy," said Maya, her voice still quivering a littleā€š"During the show they came and took me backstage. When I arrived backstage they handed me the trophy and a journalist from ESPN began to interview me. I looked at the trophy with my name and couldn't believe it. I asked if I had really won and she said, "'Didn't they warn you?'" The Brazilian surfer, who resides most of the year in Hawaii, shook visibly while accepting the trophy, which is considered an Oscar of the world of sports.

Her name now goes alongside some of the world's most legendary athletes: Tiger Woods, Michael Phelps, Pete Sampras, and Roger Federer, among others.

"I was even happier because the award was made by popular vote. To compete against names of this weight and to win was beyond my wildest dreams."

Watch the awards show this Sunday, July 19th 9 PM E.T. on EPSN.
