When Liza was little she wiped out pretty bad and was too scared to try surfing again. That could have been the end of Liza's surf story. But six years ago, 17-year-old Puerto Rican surfer Liza Caban tried again and caught the surfing love. Her rapid progression was almost scary to witness, Liza was surfing better and better every week. After only a year and half of surfing, Liza was picked up to surf for Billabong. Now she is Puerto Rico's most talented female surfer.
She surfs for the Puerto Rico team at World Juniors. In 2008, Liza won her first pro event; the Corona Extra Pro Surf Circuit held at Playa Domes in Rincon (and in 2009 she earned a 3rd place finish). Liza competes in all the Open and Junior events in her area and was named the 2010 "Athlete of the Year in Surfing" by Sports and Recreation Organization in Puerto Rico.
Though Liza has been described as a ‘mellow teenager’ in the mist of the very loud and outspoken Puerto Rican culture; she is anything but shy in the water. She catches twice as many waves as anyone in the lineup and her backside snap is crazy powerful. Her father a longtime Aguadilla local, Wilo Caban, trains with her and is someone Liza looks up to in and out of the water.
Liza and Billabong are hosting Puerto Rico’s the first all-girls surf event, "Un Dia De Surfing Con Liza" at Playa Jobos on August 14th, 2010. Liza describes, "It's a contest where girls of all ages can compete and have a good time." So get out there and have a good time.
